The Helki Breed was found through an
accidental mating of a cat from San Joquin County CA and cat
from Florin CA. The resulting kittens displayed a loose wavy
coat that grew into a wooly thick coat that is unassuming to the
naked eye. Most cat breeds that have wavy or curly fur do not
have guard hair, the Helki have both crinkled guard hair and
straight guard hair but less guard hair than the normal straight
coated cat, and their coat is mainly made of the plush under
coat of awn and down fur. Because their coat is mainly felt and
not seen I choose the name Helki as it means "touch" in Miwok
Indian a dominant Native American Tribe from the region the cats
were discovered in.
After a few years of research I have
been able to find out that the wavy furred cats of Florin were
well known in the area for around 30 years, but no one had
really thought much of it. One of the neighbors said that she
figured if people had wavy fur it made sense that cat could as
well, and never thought much of it otherwise.
Like other breed founders I have sought
the advice of many. From GCCF, CFA, TICA, WCC, and ACF.
I've hounded fanciers, geneticist, and cat show judges. And so
the breed work continues. To read more on Helki history and

The Helki is an intellegent sweet natured helpful cat. They are
extremely sensitive to the feelings of their humans and will do
everything they can to please their humans. They are moderately
