Cattery:
Wyrdwul is a small cattery located in Sacramento
CA that is dedicated to the Helki Cat Breed. The name is
derived from the old Norse word Wyrd which means fate and is the base
for the word weird. Wul is a play on sound; I say it
like weird wool/Wyrdwul. The cats have a woolly type of
fur and I consider it fate that they came into my life
and they are certainly weird cats. So have fun and take
a look around the site.
Breed:
While the Helki has been present and evolving in the
local Florin Sacramento Area for 30 plus years, it is a
newly noticed breed, which I have begun to refine for
future recognition. The Helki is a semi-rexed cat. They
display both straight and wavy guard hairs and a crimped
undercoat. Most Helki do not show their rexing off, it
is purely for the sensitive pleasure of touch. Hence the
name of the Breed, Helki derived from the Miwok word for
‘touch’. The Eastern Miwok are the Native American
people who thrived in the Sacramento region.
Breeder: A little about me, I have had a
love for animals my entire life. I started breeding
rabbits under my Mentor Barbie Brown in Lathrop
California. I bred them, she showed them. I also took
time to work on the rabbit farm and learn many things
about animal husbandry. I have bred exotic rats, feeder
mice and rats as well. After several years without
breeding any animals whatsoever, and with no intention
on breeding anything… I moved to Sacramento. I had
several neutered cats and a whole female (Shadow). After
I lost a cat to a dog, I got a new female kitten (Mia),
around the same time my son brought home a male feral
kitten (Chuck) from our street. That was that, Chuck
mated with Mia and Shadow about the same time producing
5 total kittens. That was the beginning of this
adventure. Now I work with Cat Fanciers worldwide to
help work on and establish this breed. The Wyrdwul
Cattery name is registered with the CFA (Cat Fanciers
Association)
